Diagnosis and Management of Ectopic Pregnancy: Green-top Guideline No. 21

This guideline replaces ‘The Management of Tubal Pregnancy’ | BJOG. First published: October 2016

Early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy using transvaginal ultrasound and appropriate management depending on the type of ectopic pregnancy, including laparoscopic surgery for tubal pregnancy, is essential to reduce maternal complications and deaths from the condition, a new UK guideline recommends.

One in every 90 pregnancies in the United Kingdom results in an ectopic pregnancy, as an estimated 11 000 ectopic pregnancies are diagnosed each year. Most occur in the fallopian tubes, but three to five in every 100 ectopic pregnancies occur at other sites, including the cervix or abdomen.
